Individual differences in pain sensitivity: genetic and environmental contributions.

What was done
Experimental pain sensitivity to cold-pressor and contact heat was measured in 53 monozygotic twin pairs, 39 dizygotic twin pairs, and 4 single twins to determine the heritability of each phenotype and the overlap of genetic and environmental influences across modalities.
What was found
Genetic factors accounted for an estimated 60% of the variance in cold-pressor pain and 26% of the variance in heat pain. Genetic factors shared between both modalities explained 7% of variance in cold-pressor pain and 3% in heat pain. Shared environmental factors accounted for 5% of variance in cold-pressor pain and 8% in heat pain. The remaining variance was modality-specific.
Why it matters
Cold and heat pain sensitivities represent largely distinct genetic and environmental traits rather than a single unified pain sensitivity dimension. Genetic associations identified for one pain modality cannot be generalized directly to others.
Limits
The abstract does not report participant demographics, sex distribution, or specific testing protocols. The sample size of 92 complete pairs is modest for genetic variance decomposition. Experimental acute pain responses may not generalize to clinical chronic pain states.
