Bolus doses up to 50 mg/kg bw produced rises in plasma phenylalanine and aspartic acid that did not exceed normal postprandial levels. Animal toxicity studies in mice, rats, hamsters, and dogs demonstrated no adverse effects at doses up to at least 4000 mg/kg bw/day. Carcinogenicity and neurotoxicity evaluations, including several human case-control studies and one prospective cohort study, reported no evidence of cancer across any tissue or impairment of nervous system function, learning, or behavior.
