This narrative review synthesized physiological principles of skeletal muscle contraction mechanics, age-related structural and functional changes in human and rodent skeletal muscle, and performance data from master athletes and sedentary older adults.

What was found

In humans, gradual loss of muscle fibers begins at approximately 50 years of age, resulting in approximately 50% loss of fibers from studied limb muscles by 80 years of age. A similar timing and magnitude of motor unit loss occurs in both humans and rats. In master athletes (marathon runners and weightlifters), performance begins declining after approximately age 40, with peak performance reduced by approximately 50% by age 80. Exercise training slows, but does not completely halt, age-related atrophy and weakness.

Why it matters
