The authors investigated fat cell (adipocyte) dynamics in lean and obese humans, including individuals after marked weight loss. Adipocyte turnover in adults was measured by analyzing the integration of atmospheric radiocarbon (14C derived from nuclear bomb tests) into genomic DNA to establish cell renewal and death rates.

What was found

Total adipocyte number remains constant in adulthood in both lean and obese individuals, as well as following marked weight loss. Approximately 10% of fat cells are renewed annually across all adult ages and body mass index levels. Neither adipocyte generation nor death rate was altered in early-onset obesity.

Why it matters

This study shows that human adipocyte count is established in childhood and adolescence and remains stable in adulthood, balanced by a constant ~10% annual cell turnover that may serve as a therapeutic target.
