CBD microinjections into the LH or DRN enhanced wakefulness, reduced slow wave sleep, and reduced REM sleep. The treatment increased alpha and theta power spectra while diminishing delta power spectra, and increased c-Fos expression in the LH or DRN. Why it matters
This study provides mechanistic evidence that localized CBD administration can act as a wake-inducing agent through activation of neurons in the LH and DRN.
Limits
The abstract omits sample size, animal species, control conditions, and exact quantitative results. Because the study used direct intracranial microinjections in an animal model, the findings cannot be generalized to systemic administration or human sleep physiology.
