Leukocyte telomere dynamics: longitudinal findings among young adults in the Bogalusa Heart Study.

Longitudinal cohort study of 635 young adults (450 White and 185 African American participants) participating in the Bogalusa Heart Study in Louisiana. Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) was measured at baseline (1995-1996, mean age 31.4 years) and at follow-up (2001-2006, mean age 37.4 years) to evaluate individual rates of LTL change, racial differences, and the association with smoking status.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical estimates or statistical test values. LTL change rate was highly variable across individuals, with some participants showing a paradoxical gain in LTL over the follow-up period. LTL shortening was proportional to baseline LTL. African Americans had longer LTL than White participants at both time points and experienced faster LTL shortening, which was partially explained by their longer baseline LTL. Smokers had shorter LTL than nonsmokers at both examinations.
Why it matters
This study provides longitudinal evidence that in vivo telomere shortening is proportional to baseline telomere length rather than proceeding at a uniform pace driven solely by the end-replication problem.
