What was done
Fetal speech and language processing was evaluated in 104 low-risk fetuses at 33-41 weeks gestational age using a familiarization/novelty paradigm with continuous fetal heart rate monitoring. Fetuses were familiarized with an audio recording of either their mother or an unfamiliar female stranger reading a passage. They were subsequently presented with novel auditory stimuli across four sub-studies: (1 and 2) an alternate female voice, (3) the father's voice, and (4) a female stranger speaking native English versus Mandarin.
What was found

It reports qualitative directional findings: fetuses demonstrated a novelty response to the mother's voice and to a novel foreign language, as well as an offset response following the cessation of the father's voice and a female stranger's voice.
