Narrative review synthesizing clinical and experimental literature regarding the mechanisms by which ethanol consumption disrupts magnesium transport, tissue homeostasis, and cellular function across multiple organ systems.

What was found

Alcohol intake reduces serum magnesium and increases urinary magnesium excretion 2- to 3-fold. In experimental rat models, chronic consumption of a 6% ethanol Lieber-DeCarli diet for 3 weeks resulted in marked decreases in total tissue magnesium content across brain, liver, skeletal muscle, and heart. The review links these tissue reductions to altered cytokine regulation in leukocytes/macrophages and impaired cellular energy production and protein synthesis.

Why it matters

Tissue-level magnesium loss provides a potential mechanistic contributor to secondary complications of chronic alcohol use, including stroke, sarcopenia, cardiomyopathy, steatohepatitis, and cirrhosis.

Limits
