What was done
Rats subjected to cortical impact injury (a model of traumatic brain injury) were administered sulforaphane at either 1 hour or 6 hours post-injury. Cognitive performance was evaluated using hippocampal- and prefrontal cortex-dependent behavioral tests: the Morris water maze (measuring learning latencies and probe trial platform localization) and the delayed match-to-place task (measuring working memory dysfunction).
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values. It reports that sulforaphane administered 1 hour post-injury improved Morris water maze performance (decreased latencies during learning and improved platform localization during a probe trial) and reduced working memory deficits in the delayed match-to-place task. These cognitive improvements were not observed when administration was delayed to 6 hours post-injury.
Why it matters
This study provides preclinical evidence that sulforaphane can mitigate post-TBI cognitive and working memory deficits in addition to its known cellular protective effects, though with a time-sensitive therapeutic window.
Limits
The study is restricted to a rat model and cannot be directly generalized to humans. The abstract does not report sample sizes, specific dosages, numerical data, statistical test metrics, or long-term functional outcomes.
