What was done
A pilot repeated-measures study evaluated the biological variability and impact of food intake on omega-3 fatty acid content across three blood fractions: red blood cells (RBCs), total plasma, and plasma phospholipids (PL). Blood samples were collected weekly for 6 weeks from 20 healthy volunteers in both fasting and fed states.
What was found
The within-subject coefficients of variation were: - Red blood cells: 4.1% ± 1.9% - Total plasma: 15.9% ± 6.4% - Plasma phospholipids: 14.5% ± 8.4% RBC omega-3 fatty acid content had significantly lower within-subject variability compared to the other two pools (p < 0.001) and was not affected by the fed state.
Why it matters
These findings indicate that red blood cell membrane analysis provides a more stable and meal-independent measurement of long-term omega-3 status than plasma pools.
Limits
The study was a small pilot (n = 20) restricted to healthy individuals over a brief 6-week monitoring window. Specific dietary intake, meal composition, and detailed participant demographics were not described in the abstract.
