Age, gender, and voided volume dependency of peak urinary flow rate and uroflowmetry nomogram in the Indian population.

What was done
Gravimetric uroflowmetry was performed on 1,011 healthy individuals (relatives of hospital patients) divided into distinct demographic groups: children aged 5–15 years, males aged 16–50 years, males older than 50 years, and females older than 15 years (stratified by pre-menopausal and post-menopausal status). Maximum flow rate (Qmax) and average flow rate (Qavg) were analyzed against age, gender, and voided volume to generate centile-based uroflowmetry nomograms.
What was found
The abstract reports directional relationships without providing exact numerical flow rates, standard deviations, or p-values. Qmax was higher in young adult males than in elderly males, and higher in young females than in young males. In males, Qmax increased up to age 15, decreased slowly until age 50, and declined rapidly thereafter, even after controlling for voided volume. In females, Qmax increased up to age 15, declined until pre-menopausal age, and showed no significant further decline post-menopause. Flow rate increased with voided volume up to 700 mL before plateauing and declining. Overall Qmax values were reported to be lower than values in published Western nomograms.
Why it matters
This study provides population-specific uroflowmetry reference curves for Indian patients across age groups. Establishing regional normative values helps prevent misclassification of bladder outlet obstruction or voiding dysfunction based on foreign standards.
Limits
The abstract omits exact numerical measurements, centile cutoff values, and test statistics. The cohort was derived via convenience sampling of healthy relatives of hospital patients rather than community-based random sampling. Factors such as fluid intake timing, parity in females, and prostate volume in older males were not reported in the abstract.
