For better or worse? Coregulation of couples' cortisol levels and mood states.

What was done
A dyadic ecological momentary assessment study investigated biological and affective coregulation in 30 married couples (60 individuals). Participants provided saliva samples for cortisol analysis and reported momentary mood states 4 times per day for 3 days. Data were analyzed using dyadic multilevel modeling controlling for sampling time.
What was found
The abstract reports directional findings without specific numerical values, effect sizes, or test statistics: - Husbands' and wives' cortisol levels were positively associated with their partners' cortisol levels after controlling for sampling time. - Marital satisfaction weakened the cortisol coregulation effect for wives. - Partner negative mood was positively associated with own negative mood for both husbands and wives, an association fully moderated and reduced by marital satisfaction. - Spouses' positive moods were not significantly correlated. - Coregulation was stronger during early morning and evening (at home together) than during the workday.
Why it matters
This study provides naturalistic evidence that romantic partners' physiological stress and negative moods are synchronised across daily life. It identifies marital satisfaction as a psychological buffer that may protect individuals from their partner's acute stress.
Limits
The sample is small (30 married couples) and drawn from a single demographic context, limiting generalizability. The 3-day observational design cannot determine causality, and the abstract omits quantitative effect sizes, confidence intervals, and long-term health outcomes.
