What was done

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to measure bisphenol A (BPA) migration from polycarbonate (PC) bottles into food matrices (steamed rice, hot cooked pork) and water under several simulated conditions: standing at room temperature, heating in a boiling water bath (100°C), heating by microwave to 100°C for 9 minutes, and filling with boiling water (100°C) standing for up to 3 hours across 3 different bottle types.

What was found

BPA was not detected (limit of detection: 1 µg/L or 1 ppb) in rice or cooked pork held at room temperature or heated in a boiling water bath. In contrast, microwaving to 100°C for 9 minutes resulted in BPA migration of 6 to 18 ppb in steamed rice and 5 to 15 ppb in cooked pork. For boiling water left to stand in 3 bottle types, mean BPA levels increased over time, ranging from not detected to 2.5 ppb after 60 minutes. All detected levels were below the European Union and Korea Food and Drug Administration specific migration limit of 600 ppb.

Why it matters

Limits
