What was found
Nano-structured TiO2 and ZnO in sunscreens exist as bonded aggregates of primary particles (primary sizes 30–150 nm) that do not release primary particles under application forces. Multiple studies showed neither mineral penetrates beyond the stratum corneum under exaggerated test conditions. Distribution and elimination patterns were equivalent to larger pigment-grade particles (>100 nm), and in vitro genotoxicity and photogenotoxicity profiles were considered of no consequence to human health. No quantitative effect estimates or participant numbers are reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
This review synthesizes evidence indicating that nano-scale mineral UV filters pose negligible human systemic risk up to 25% concentration, supporting their use for photoprotection.
