What was done
Researchers measured baseline resting cerebral blood flow (CBF) using SPECT imaging in 12 advanced meditators and 14 non-meditators recruited from an ongoing meditation study. Brain scans were evaluated using both region-of-interest analysis and statistical parametric mapping.

Long-term meditators showed significantly higher resting CBF (p < .05) compared to non-meditators in the prefrontal cortex, parietal cortex, thalamus, putamen, caudate, and midbrain. Meditators also had significantly greater thalamic laterality (asymmetry). The abstract did not report absolute blood flow values, effect sizes, or confidence intervals.
Why it matters
