What was done
Participants (n=30) completed a 3-month residential meditation retreat involving approximately 6 hours of daily practice consisting of concentrative meditation techniques and practices to cultivate benevolent states of mind. They were compared to a matched wait-list control group (n=30) matched for age, sex, body mass index, and prior meditation experience. Psychological measures (Perceived Control, Neuroticism, Mindfulness, Purpose in Life) were assessed pre- and post-retreat. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell samples were collected post-retreat to measure telomerase activity. Analyses applied 1-tailed significance criteria based on directional a priori hypotheses.
What was found
Telomerase activity was significantly higher in retreat participants than in controls at the end of the 3-month retreat (p < 0.05; exact numerical values not reported in the abstract). The retreat group showed significantly greater increases in Perceived Control, Mindfulness, and Purpose in Life, as well as greater decreases in Neuroticism (p < 0.01). Mediation models showed that retreat effects on telomerase activity were mediated by increased Perceived Control and decreased Neuroticism, which were partially mediated by Mindfulness and Purpose in Life. Increased Purpose in Life directly mediated the telomerase group difference, whereas Mindfulness did not.
Why it matters
This study provides initial experimental evidence linking an intensive meditation intervention and positive psychological change to enhanced telomerase activity in human immune cells.
Limits
Baseline telomerase activity was not assessed, preventing confirmation of pre-existing group equivalency for the primary biological outcome. The sample size was small (30 participants per arm) and analyses used one-tailed significance testing. The wait-list control design cannot isolate meditation practice from retreat-related lifestyle and environmental factors such as diet, shared living, and relief from daily responsibilities.
