Pistachio diet improves erectile function parameters and serum lipid profiles in patients with erectile dysfunction.

What was done
In a prospective interventional study, 17 married male patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) lasting at least 12 months consumed a diet containing 100 g of Antep pistachio nuts daily for 3 weeks. International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) scores, penile color Doppler ultrasound (PCDU) parameters, and fasting serum lipids (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides) were measured before and after the 3-week dietary period.
What was found
After 3 weeks of pistachio supplementation: - Mean IIEF-15 score increased from 36 ± 7.5 to 54.2 ± 4.9 (P=0.001), with significant improvements across all five individual domains (P<0.05). - Mean penile peak systolic velocity increased from 35.5 ± 15.2 cm/s to 43.3 ± 12.4 cm/s (P=0.018). - Total cholesterol and LDL decreased significantly (P=0.008 and P=0.007, respectively), while HDL increased (P=0.001). Specific numerical values for lipid changes were not reported in the abstract. - No side effects were reported.
Why it matters
This pilot study suggests that short-term pistachio consumption may positively influence penile hemodynamics, subjective erectile function, and lipid parameters. It provides initial rationale for exploring dietary nut intake in vascular erectile health.
Limits
The study is primarily limited by the absence of a control or placebo group and a very small sample size (n=17), leaving subjective IIEF gains highly vulnerable to placebo and expectancy effects. The follow-up period was very short (3 weeks), preventing conclusions about long-term efficacy, adherence, or caloric impact.
