Viewing the beloved produced significant activations in the reward and motivation systems, specifically the ventral tegmental area, caudate, mid-orbitofrontal cortex, and cerebellum. Traditionality and Modernity scores were positively correlated with nucleus accumbens activity in differing regions and sides of the brain. Subgenual area and superior frontal gyrus activity was associated with higher relationship happiness at 18-month follow-up.
Why it matters
The study suggests that midbrain dopamine-rich reward circuitry underlying early romantic love is conserved in Chinese participants, consistent with prior Western cohorts.
Limits
Sample size is very small (18 participants), posing a high risk of false positives and effect inflation. The abstract provides no statistical values, effect sizes, or follow-up completion rates, and scanner image-viewing only approximates real-world romantic attachment.
