Creatine monohydrate supplementation increases muscle creatine and phosphocreatine concentrations by approximately 15-40%, with nearly 99% of orally ingested creatine monohydrate absorbed and either taken up by muscle or excreted in urine without medically significant adverse effects. In contrast, there is little to no evidence demonstrating that novel forms of creatine provide greater bioavailability, efficacy, or safety compared to creatine monohydrate, and their regulatory status remains less clearly defined.
Why it matters
This review highlights that despite commercial marketing claims of superior properties for newer creatine variants, creatine monohydrate remains the most thoroughly validated, effective, and safe form of creatine supplementation.
Limits
