What was done
Directly measured peak oxygen uptake (V·O2peak) in 4,637 healthy Norwegian adults from the HUNT Study to develop and cross-validate sex-stratified, non-exercise multivariable regression models. Final models included 2,067 men (mean age 48.8 years) and 2,193 women (mean age 47.9 years) using standard data-splitting procedures to evaluate constant and total error.
What was found
Age, waist circumference, leisure-time physical activity, and resting heart rate were identified as the strongest predictors of V·O2peak in both sexes. The full models accounted for 61% of the variance in V·O2peak for men (SEE = 5.70) and 56% for women (SEE = 5.14).
Why it matters
Provides a low-cost, accessible regression tool to estimate cardiorespiratory fitness in general outpatient settings without requiring formal exercise testing.
Limits
The study sample was confined to a healthy Norwegian cohort, limiting generalizability to clinical populations or ethnically diverse demographics. Validation was restricted to internal split-sample testing rather than an independent external population, and 39% to 44% of the variance remained unexplained.
