What was done
Thirteen trained participants were tested for leg-press one repetition maximum (1RM) under two warm-up conditions: specific warm-up only (SWU; 1 set of 8 reps at ~50% estimated 1RM, followed by 1 set of 3 reps at 70% estimated 1RM) and combined general and specific warm-up (G + SWU; 20 minutes of stationary cycling at 60% HRmax followed by the identical SWU protocol). Values of 1RM were compared using a paired t-test.
What was found
Strength values were on average 8.4% higher in the G + SWU condition compared with the SWU condition (p = 0.002).
Why it matters
This study provides empirical support for testing guidelines recommending a moderate-intensity general warm-up prior to specific warm-ups to optimize maximum strength expression during 1RM assessments.
Limits
The sample size was small (n = 13). The abstract does not specify participant sex, precise training background, or washout time between sessions. The evaluation was limited to a single exercise (leg press) and a single 20-minute cycling protocol, so findings may not generalize to upper-body testing, different warm-up durations, or untrained individuals.
