Cardiovascular and autonomic responses after exercise sessions with different intensities and durations.

What was done
Ten healthy, active men (aged 25 ± 1 years) completed four experimental exercise sessions and one control session on a cycle ergometer across varying intensities and durations. Blood pressure and heart rate variability (RMSSD) were measured at rest and up to 60 minutes after exercise.
What was found
Post-exercise hypotension did not occur in any experimental session (P > 0.05). Parasympathetic reactivation was delayed after high-intensity exercise, with RMSSD remaining lower than pre-exercise baseline at 15–20 minutes post-exercise (Δ = -19 ± 3.7). RMSSD changes differed significantly between high- and low-intensity sessions (Δ = -30.7 ± 4.0 vs. Δ = -9.9 ± 2.5, P < 0.05).
Why it matters
The findings indicate that post-exercise blood pressure reductions may not occur in normotensive young adults, and that higher exercise intensity requires longer post-exercise autonomic recovery.
Limits
The sample size is very small (n = 10) and limited to young, active normotensive males. Monitoring was limited to 60 minutes post-exercise, and the abstract omits specific exercise protocols, absolute blood pressure numbers, and female participants.
