What was done

Subordinate female marmoset monkeys (*Callithrix jacchus*) were removed from their social groups under different olfactory exposure conditions to determine the role of pheromonal cues in reproductive suppression. Two control groups of subordinate females were separated without scent contact from their dominant females (control group 1, n = 8; control group 2, n = 5). An experimental group of subordinate females (n = 8) was separated from the group but maintained in scent contact only with their dominant females. Time to ovulation and plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were measured.

What was found

Subordinate females separated without dominant scent contact ovulated at 10.8 ± 1.4 days (control group 1) and 10.4 ± 0.8 days (control group 2; mean ± s.e.m.). Subordinate females maintained with scent contact from dominant females experienced a delayed onset of ovulation at 31.0 ± 6.4 days. Plasma LH concentrations during the scent transfer phase were lower than in controls without scent transfer and comparable to concentrations seen when females were subordinates within groups.

Why it matters

This study provides evidence that pheromonal signals from dominant female marmosets directly maintain LH suppression and delay ovulation in subordinate females, demonstrating physiological reproductive suppression via olfactory cues independent of physical or behavioral contact.

Limits

The study was conducted in a small sample of captive female marmosets (total n = 21). Specific plasma LH concentrations and statistical test values were not reported in the abstract. Findings from non-human primates cannot be directly generalized to human reproductive physiology.
