What was done
Pregnant rats were assigned to a treadmill exercise protocol or a control group. Offspring of both sexes were evaluated at two developmental stages: prepubertal (postnatal day 26) and adult (4 months old). Outcomes assessed included behavioral measures of anxiety and locomotor activity (via open field and elevated plus maze tests), prefrontal cortex vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels, and serum corticosterone concentrations.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values or test statistics. Directionally, offspring from exercised mothers showed lower anxiety levels than controls across both sexes at both 26 days and 4 months of age. Locomotor activity was reported to increase more in females. Prefrontal cortex VEGF and BDNF concentrations were higher in the maternal exercise group regardless of sex or age. BDNF levels correlated positively with open field test performance, and VEGF levels correlated positively with elevated plus maze results. Serum corticosterone levels did not differ between groups.
Why it matters
This study provides preclinical evidence that maternal aerobic exercise during gestation may induce persistent neurotrophic and behavioral changes in offspring that extend into adulthood.
Limits
The findings are from a rodent model and cannot be directly generalized to humans. The abstract does not report sample sizes, specific exercise parameters (intensity, duration, frequency), exact numerical measurements, or confidence intervals.
