This quantitative review summarized cross-sectional studies (comparing young adults aged 18–45 years to older adults aged >65 years) and longitudinal cohort studies evaluating the rates of age-related skeletal muscle mass loss (sarcopenia) and strength loss (dynapenia), alongside their associations with disability and mortality.

Cross-sectional studies showed a median reported rate of muscle mass loss of 0.47% per year in men and 0.37% per year in women. In longitudinal studies at age 75 years, muscle mass was lost at 0.80–0.98% per year in men and 0.64–0.70% per year in women. Strength loss occurred faster: 3–4% per year in men and 2.5–3% per year in women. In studies evaluating both in the same sample, strength was lost 2 to 5 times faster than muscle mass. Loss of strength was a more consistent predictor of disability and mortality than loss of muscle mass.
