In longitudinal studies at age 75 years, muscle mass was lost at 0.80–0.98% per year in men and 0.64–0.70% per year in women. Strength loss occurred faster: 3–4% per year in men and 2.5–3% per year in women. In studies evaluating both in the same sample, strength was lost 2 to 5 times faster than muscle mass. Loss of strength was a more consistent predictor of disability and mortality than loss of muscle mass.
