The study examined individuals aged 80 and older who demonstrated episodic memory performance comparable to normative values for 50- to 65-year-olds (defined as SuperAgers). Cortical morphometry derived from brain imaging in these SuperAgers was compared across three groups: the SuperAgers, cognitively normal age-matched elderly controls, and healthy middle-aged controls aged 50 to 65.
What was found
The abstract provides no exact quantitative values, sample sizes, or test statistics. Directionally, SuperAgers showed significantly thicker cerebral cortex compared to age-matched healthy elderly peers and showed no detectable atrophy relative to the 50- to 65-year-old healthy group. Additionally, a region of left anterior cingulate cortex was significantly thicker in SuperAgers than in both the age-matched elderly and middle-aged control groups.
Why it matters
This work demonstrates that exceptional memory performance in advanced age is paired with distinct structural neuroanatomy, avoiding typical age-related cortical thinning and showing regional thickening in the anterior cingulate cortex.
Limits
The abstract omits sample size, demographic characteristics, effect sizes, and exact cortical thickness metrics. The cross-sectional design cannot distinguish whether these structural findings reflect resistance to age-related neurodegeneration versus lifelong differences in peak brain reserve. Longitudinal follow-up and mechanistic markers were not reported.
