What was done

Nine participants underwent a 10-minute resting time control followed by a passive blood flow restriction (BFR) protocol consisting of five 5-minute cuff inflation bouts separated by 3 minutes of deflation. Cuff pressure was set relative to individual thigh circumference. Investigators measured vastus lateralis (VL) and rectus femoris (RF) muscle thickness, plasma volume, discomfort ratings, whole blood lactate, electromyography (EMG), and heart rate.

What was found

BFR led to a 6% increase in VL thickness (p = 0.027), a 22% increase in RF thickness (p = 0.001), and a 15% decrease in plasma volume (p = 0.001). Discomfort peaked at a mean rating of 2.7 (light discomfort). There were no statistically significant changes in blood lactate, EMG, or heart rate, though a non-significant trend toward increased heart rate appeared during the fifth inflation bout (p = 0.057).

Why it matters

This study shows that passive BFR without exercise acutely drives fluid shifts and muscle swelling, suggesting that cell swelling may contribute to the muscle-preserving effects seen with passive occlusion protocols.

Limits

The sample size was very small (n = 9), and demographics (such as sex, age, and training status) were not specified in the abstract. The study lacked a randomized control group or counterbalanced order, as all subjects completed the time control before the BFR intervention. Long-term hypertrophic or clinical outcomes were not evaluated.
