The authors conducted a qualitative review assessing all available scientific studies on the impact of acute alcohol consumption on nocturnal sleep architecture in healthy volunteers across different doses, ages, and genders.

What was found

The abstract reports no numerical values, sample sizes, or effect sizes. Qualitatively, across all dosages, alcohol reduced sleep onset latency, consolidated early sleep, delayed the first REM period, and increased sleep disruption during the second half of the night. Slow-wave sleep (SWS) increased during the first half of the night across doses, ages, and genders, with total night SWS increased at high doses. High doses reduced first-half REM sleep, while moderate to high doses decreased total night REM sleep.

Why it matters

This review clarifies that although alcohol promotes faster sleep onset and early deep sleep, it compromises overall sleep quality through late-night fragmentation and dose-dependent REM suppression.

Limits

The abstract provides no quantitative statistics, confidence intervals, or number of reviewed studies. Findings in healthy volunteers cannot be extrapolated directly to clinical populations with chronic alcohol dependence or pre-existing sleep disorders.
