Sugar intake in the United States increased more than 40-fold since the American Revolution, and soft drink intake grew 5-fold between 1950 and 2000, with soft drinks and fruit drinks accounting for just under 50% of added dietary sugars. The review noted that meta-analyses link sweetened beverage intake to obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and gout in men. Randomized trials demonstrated that sugar or fructose alone increases plasma triglycerides, body weight, visceral adipose tissue, muscle fat, and liver fat compared to non-caloric controls. Fructose is rapidly cleared by the liver, depleting hepatic ATP, stimulating de novo lipogenesis, and raising uric acid.
