Seizures in REM sleep were rare, accounting for approximately 1% or less of total seizures. When indexed to duration and compared to wakefulness, REM sleep had an average of 7.83 times fewer focal seizures, 3.25 times fewer generalized seizures, and 1.11 times fewer focal interictal discharges. Across all evaluated sleep stages, REM sleep was the most protective against focal seizures, generalized seizures, focal interictal discharges, and two epilepsy syndromes.
