Brain creatine depletion in vegetarians? A cross-sectional ¹H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-MRS) study.

What was done
A cross-sectional study compared healthy vegetarians and omnivores to evaluate the influence of diet on brain creatine content. Brain total creatine in the posterior cingulate cortex was measured using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-MRS). Habitual dietary creatine intake was assessed using 3-day food recalls.
What was found
Vegetarians consumed significantly less dietary creatine than omnivores (0.03 [SD 0.01] vs. 1.34 [SD 0.62] g/day; P=0.005). However, total brain creatine content in the posterior cingulate cortex did not differ significantly between vegetarians and omnivores (5.999 [SD 0.811] vs. 5.917 [SD 0.665] IU; P=0.77).
Why it matters
The findings indicate that under normal conditions, brain creatine content in healthy individuals is maintained independently of dietary intake, relying instead on endogenous synthesis.
Limits
The abstract does not state the sample size or participant characteristics. The cross-sectional design cannot evaluate longitudinal changes or establish causality.
