What was done

Researchers developed and applied a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method using solid phase microextraction cooled with liquid nitrogen and a polyacrylate fiber to quantify the migration of two phthalates, dibutylphthalate (DBP) and benzylbutylphthalate (BBP), into liquid food simulants. New and used plastic food containers filled with ultrapure water were heated in a domestic microwave oven at varying power levels and heating durations.

What was found

The limits of detection were 0.08 µg/L for DBP and 0.31 µg/L for BBP. BBP was not detected in any analyzed samples. DBP was detected at concentrations ranging from below the limit of quantification (<LOQ) up to 7.5 µg/L. DBP migration was higher from containers with a history of prolonged use and increased with longer microwave heating times.

Why it matters

This study provides an analytical method to quantify trace phthalate release and demonstrates that prolonged microwave heating, particularly in aged plastic containers, can leach detectable levels of plasticizers into aqueous simulants.
