What was done

The authors compiled a list of 25 public figures diagnosed with or dying from pancreatic cancer between 2006 and 2011. They specified interrupted time series models using Google Trends data to evaluate shifts in pancreatic cancer search queries and analyzed weekly media coverage archived on Google News.

What was found

Most public figure announcements corresponded with no appreciable change in search queries or media coverage. In contrast, Patrick Swayze's diagnosis was associated with a 285% increase in pancreatic cancer search queries (95% CI: 212 to 360) and weak increases in media coverage. Steve Jobs's death was associated with a 197% increase in pancreatic cancer search queries (95% CI: 131 to 266) and a 3517% increase in media coverage (95% CI: 2882 to 4492). Overall, a doubling in pancreatic cancer-specific media coverage corresponded with a 325% increase in search queries.

Why it matters

This paper demonstrates that the celebrity effect on public health information seeking is concentrated in a small subset of exceptionally high-profile figures rather than all public announcements. It highlights digital surveillance as an effective quantitative tool for tracking public attention and communication dynamics.

Limits

The sample was limited to 25 public figures over a single 5-year window. Search queries and Google News archives are indirect aggregate proxies that do not measure individual comprehension, clinical behaviors, or offline engagement, and search engine users may not be representative of the older populations at highest risk for pancreatic cancer.
