Association between mobile phone use and semen quality: a systemic review and meta-analysis.

Authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis following Cochrane and PRISMA guidelines to evaluate the association between mobile phone radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation and semen quality. Five databases (Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, CNKI, VIP database, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials) were searched through May 2013. The review included 18 studies (3,947 men and 186 rats), with 12 studies (4 human studies with 1,533 men, 4 in vitro studies, and 4 animal studies with 97 rats) pooled in meta-analyses.
What was found
In human studies, meta-analysis indicated that mobile phone use had no adverse effects on semen parameters (no numerical effect sizes or confidence intervals reported in the abstract). In vitro meta-analyses showed detrimental effects on sperm motility [pooled mean difference (MD) -4.11, 95% CI -8.08 to -0.13] and sperm viability [pooled MD -3.82, 95% CI -7.00 to -0.65]. In animal studies, radiofrequency exposure reduced sperm concentration [pooled MD -8.75, 95% CI -17.37 to -0.12] and sperm motility [pooled MD -17.72, 95% CI -32.79 to -2.65].
Why it matters
This review highlights a discrepancy between preclinical models and human clinical data regarding radiofrequency radiation, showing clear laboratory harm to sperm parameters that is not confirmed in pooled human observational studies.
Limits
The human meta-analysis was limited to only four studies and 1,533 men with observational exposure rather than standardized dosimetry. The abstract does not provide exact effect estimates, confidence intervals, or heterogeneity statistics for the human analysis. In vitro and rodent exposure models carry indirectness and may not reflect real-world mobile phone use.
