What was done
Twenty-nine non-treatment-seeking, chronic frequent cannabis smokers were monitored during sustained abstinence in a closed residential research unit for up to four weeks. Participants completed a daily computerized battery of five instruments evaluating psychological, sensory, and physical symptoms associated with cannabinoid intoxication and withdrawal. Blood plasma and oral fluid samples were collected concurrently to analyze cannabinoid concentrations. Changes from baseline (Day 0) were evaluated using regression models.
What was found
Participant retention was 66% at two weeks and 34% at four weeks (the abstract reports no absolute numerical symptom scores or effect sizes). Most abstinence effects, including irritability and anxiety, peaked on Days 0–3 and decreased thereafter. Decreased appetite began normalizing on Day 4, and cannabis craving significantly decreased over time. In contrast, difficulty getting to sleep and strange dreams increased over time. Residual drug effects were at maximum intensity at admission, positively correlated with initial plasma and oral fluid cannabinoid levels, and had a higher overall prevalence than withdrawal symptoms.
Why it matters
