A comparative study of broccoli sprouts powder and standard triple therapy on cardiovascular risk factors following H.pylori eradication: a randomized clinical trial in patients with type 2 diabetes.

What was done
Eighty-six type 2 diabetic patients with positive H. pylori stool antigen tests were randomized into three groups: standard triple therapy (STT: omeprazole 20 mg, clarithromycin 500 mg, amoxicillin 1000 mg twice daily for 14 days), broccoli sprouts powder (BSP: 6 g/day for 28 days), or combination therapy (STT + BSP). Eradication rates, blood pressure, anthropometrics, serum lipids, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured after 4 weeks.
What was found
Seventy-seven participants completed the study (STT n=28, BSP n=25, STT+BSP n=24). H. pylori eradication rates were 89.3% in STT, 56.0% in BSP, and 91.7% in STT+BSP. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure significantly decreased in the STT+BSP group (P < 0.05). Serum triglycerides and TG/HDL-C ratio increased in the STT group (P < 0.05). Serum hs-CRP significantly decreased in the BSP group from 3.0 ± 2.5 to 2.3 ± 2.1 (P < 0.05).
Why it matters
Broccoli sprouts powder alone is substantially less effective than standard triple therapy for H. pylori eradication, but co-administration may reduce blood pressure and prevent antibiotic-related adverse lipid shifts in diabetic patients.
Limits
The abstract omits baseline and follow-up numerical values for blood pressure and lipid parameters. The sample size was small (77 completers), follow-up was limited to 4 weeks, and the findings in type 2 diabetic patients may not generalize to non-diabetic populations.
