The effect of inter-set rest intervals on resistance exercise-induced muscle hypertrophy.

This narrative review evaluated existing research on how inter-set rest interval duration during resistance exercise influences muscular hypertrophy. The authors synthesized longitudinal studies measuring chronic changes in muscle size alongside evidence on acute physiological mechanisms, including post-exercise hormonal surges, immune responses, metabolic stress, muscle damage, and energy production.
What was found
No quantitative effect sizes or numerical statistics were reported in the abstract. Among the longitudinal studies directly measuring muscle hypertrophy, none found superior growth with shorter rest intervals compared with longer rest intervals, and one study found superior growth with longer rest. Rest intervals under 1 minute acutely increased serum growth hormone and decreased the testosterone-to-cortisol ratio, but the relationship between transient hormonal changes and chronic muscular hypertrophy was identified as weak and contentious.
Why it matters
This review challenges long-standing resistance training dogma recommending short rest intervals for muscle growth, showing that acute hormonal spikes do not translate into greater long-term hypertrophy.
