What was done

The authors investigated the crosstalk and temporal sequence between macroautophagy and chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA) in cultured Burkitt lymphoma (Raji) cells subjected to either nutrient deprivation (serum starvation) or toxic stress from arsenic trioxide, with or without the macroautophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine.

What was found

In starvation conditions, macroautophagy was activated first, peaked within the first few hours, and then declined toward baseline, while CMA progressively increased as macroautophagy waned. Under arsenic trioxide treatment, macroautophagy increased, but CMA activity was not enhanced until macroautophagy was inhibited with 3-methyladenine.

Why it matters
