The Effects of Broccoli Sprout Extract Containing Sulforaphane on Lipid Peroxidation and Helicobacter pylori Infection in the Gastric Mucosa.

What was done
Participants were randomized in a double-blind design into three groups: H. pylori-positive receiving broccoli sprout extract containing sulforaphane (BSES, group A, n=33), H. pylori-positive receiving placebo (group B, n=28), and H. pylori-negative receiving BSES (group C, n=28). H. pylori density was indirectly quantified using a 13C-urea breath test (UBT) and gastric juice aspirate ammonia concentration during gastroscopy. Gastric mucosal malondialdehyde (MDA, a lipid peroxidation marker) and reduced glutathione (GSH, an antioxidant marker) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay before and after treatment.
What was found
In H. pylori-positive patients receiving BSES (group A), treatment did not significantly alter 13C-UBT values (p=0.634) or gastric ammonia concentrations (p=0.505). BSES treatment significantly reduced mucosal MDA concentrations in group A (p<0.05) and group C (p<0.001). Gastric mucosal GSH concentrations did not differ before and after treatment in any group. The abstract reports p-values but omits exact baseline and post-treatment numerical values.
Why it matters
Sulforaphane from broccoli sprout extract reduces gastric mucosal oxidative stress without acting as a direct clearance agent for H. pylori infection in humans.
Limits
The sample size was modest (89 total subjects across three arms). The abstract does not report intervention duration, sulforaphane dosage, adverse events, histological verification, or exact numeric concentrations for any endpoint.
