What was done

Two cohorts of 13-year-olds identified in the 1970s (1972–1974 and 1976–1978) as scoring in the top 1% of mathematical reasoning ability (1,037 males, 613 females; total N = 1,650) were followed up approximately 40 years later. Researchers assessed their careers, accomplishments, psychological well-being, families, lifestyle preferences, priorities, and time allocation.

What was found

Across both cohorts, 4.1% earned tenure at major research universities, 2.3% became top executives at Fortune 500 or major companies, and 2.4% became attorneys at major firms. The participants published 85 books and 7,572 refereed articles, secured 681 patents, and accumulated $358 million in grants. Males earned substantially higher incomes than their spouses, while females earned slightly less than their spouses. Differences between sexes in career outcomes aligned with observed differences in lifestyle preferences, priorities, and time allocation.

This 40-year follow-up provides long-term evidence that mathematical precocity identified at age 13 strongly predicts high-level creative contributions, professional leadership, and career achievement in adulthood.
