What was done
A randomized crossover trial was conducted in 60 noninstitutionalized community-dwelling adults aged 60 years or older. Participants visited the study site three times in a randomized sequence to consume the same beverage packaged in three container combinations: two glass bottles, two cans, or one can and one glass bottle. Urinary bisphenol A (BPA) concentration, blood pressure, and heart rate variability were measured two hours after consumption. Differences were analyzed using paired t-tests and mixed-effects models.
What was found
Urinary BPA concentration increased by >1600% after consuming canned beverages compared to glass-bottled beverages. Systolic blood pressure adjusted for daily variance increased by ≈4.5 mm Hg after consuming two canned beverages compared to two glass-bottled beverages, which was statistically significant. Parameters of heart rate variability showed no statistically significant differences.
Why it matters
This study provides experimental evidence in humans that acute dietary exposure to BPA from canned beverage containers causes an immediate rise in systolic blood pressure. It establishes a direct short-term link between common food packaging and cardiovascular markers.
Limits
The sample size was small (n = 60) and limited to older adults (aged ≥60) from a single community center. Outcomes were assessed only at a single acute time point (two hours post-ingestion), leaving chronic blood pressure effects unmeasured.
