Acute effects of feeding fructose, glucose and sucrose on blood lipid levels and systemic inflammation.

What was done
Fourteen healthy subjects participated in a randomized, single-blind, crossover trial. After an overnight fast, participants consumed one of three isocaloric drinks containing 50 g of fructose, glucose, or sucrose dissolved in water. Blood samples were collected at baseline, 30, 60, and 120 minutes post-intervention to measure glucose, insulin, blood lipids (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP).
What was found
Glucose and sucrose caused significantly larger initial spikes in glucose and insulin compared to fructose, returning near baseline within two hours. Change in AUC for total cholesterol, LDL, and HDL was significantly higher after fructose intake compared with glucose or sucrose (P < 0.05). Triglyceride AUC did not significantly change between interventions. Change in AUC for hs-CRP was significantly higher after fructose than glucose (P < 0.05), but the difference between fructose and sucrose was not statistically significant (P = 0.07). No exact numerical values were reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
The findings show that acute ingestion of fructose alters lipid and inflammatory profiles differently from glucose or sucrose within two hours in healthy individuals.
Limits
The sample size was very small (n = 14) and limited to healthy subjects. Measurements ended at 120 minutes, potentially missing delayed lipemic changes, and the abstract omits baseline demographics, exact numerical effect sizes, and variance estimates.
