Impact of the Baltimore Experience Corps Trial on cortical and hippocampal volumes.

What was done
Nested within the Baltimore Experience Corps Trial, the Brain Health Study randomized 111 older adults (58 intervention, 53 controls) to evaluate the impact of an intergenerational social health promotion program on biomarkers of brain health. Cortical and hippocampal volumes were assessed at baseline and annual follow-ups over a 2-year trial exposure using intention-to-treat analyses for the full sample and sex-stratified subgroups.
What was found
Program-specific increases in brain volume reached statistical significance only in men (P ≤ .04). Over 2 years, men in the intervention group showed a 0.7% to 1.6% increase in cortical and hippocampal volumes, whereas control men exhibited age-related declines. Women in the intervention arm showed modest gains of 0.3% to 0.54% by year 2 compared with declines of about 1% in control women.
Why it matters
These findings suggest that purposeful social health engagement can halt and potentially reverse age-related atrophy in brain regions vulnerable to dementia, particularly among older men.
Limits
The sample size was relatively small (111 participants total), and statistically significant volume increases were observed only in the male subgroup. The abstract lacks confidence intervals, exact baseline demographic characteristics, and data on whether these volumetric increases translated into improved clinical cognitive outcomes.
