What was done
Peritoneal mast cells were freshly isolated from male and female rat donors. Researchers evaluated the in vitro effects of estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) alone, or as pretreatments prior to substance P or IgE-mediated stimulation, on histamine release and high-affinity IgE receptor (FcεRI) expression.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical values. It found that sex steroids altered mast cell histamine release in a dose- and donor-sex-dependent manner, exerting direct, synergistic, or inhibitory effects depending on the stimulus and hormone used. Peritoneal mast cells from female rats were more susceptible to sex steroid modulation than those from males. Sex steroids had no effect on FcεRI expression in mast cells from either sex.
Why it matters
This basic science work demonstrates that donor sex influences mast cell reactivity to sex hormones, highlighting the importance of accounting for biological sex in preclinical immunological and allergic research.
Limits
