What was done
A longitudinal study evaluated 183 opposite-sex newlywed couples (366 participants) across two laboratory visits: approximately 6 months after marriage and again at roughly 2 years into marriage. At each visit, spouses engaged in a laboratory conflict discussion and provided serial saliva samples before, during, and after the discussion to model cortisol trajectories. Dyadic analytic methods were applied to evaluate longitudinal convergence in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis responses and examine associations with cohabitation history and relationship dissatisfaction.
What was found
Couples exhibited significant convergence in cortisol trajectories around the conflict discussion over time, showing greater similarity in cortisol patterns at 2 years compared to 6 months of marriage. Longer pre-marital cohabitation predicted stronger convergence in cortisol slopes prior to the conflict discussion. Higher relationship dissatisfaction was significantly associated with greater convergence in acute cortisol levels during the conflict discussion. Why it matters
This study provides longitudinal evidence that spouses' physiological stress responses become increasingly synchronized over the early years of marriage.
