What was done
Across a series of nine behavioral experimental tasks, researchers tested chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) to evaluate domain-general cognitive prerequisites for cooking. The experiments evaluated their preferences for cooked versus raw food, causal comprehension of food transformation and its generalization, willingness to endure temporal delays, willingness to surrender raw food for transformation, and capacity to transport and save food for future cooking opportunities.
What was found
The abstract provides qualitative outcomes without specific sample sizes or numerical effect sizes. The authors reported that chimpanzees preferred cooked food over raw food, understood the causal transformation involved in cooking and generalized it across contexts, accepted time delays to receive cooked items, relinquished raw food to enable its transformation, and transported as well as saved raw food in anticipation of subsequent cooking opportunities.
Why it matters
The findings demonstrate that several complex cognitive traits required for cooking do not uniquely depend on human culture or modern culinary technology. These capacities were likely present in the common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees prior to the deliberate control of fire.
Limits
The abstract reports no sample sizes, individual animal characteristics, test-retest reliability metrics, or quantitative statistics (such as effect sizes or confidence intervals). As an animal behavioral study in chimpanzees, direct translation to early hominin behavior relies on evolutionary inference, and the tasks do not evaluate the physical ability to manage fire itself.
