The authors searched MEDLINE/PubMed through March 2015 to identify all scientific publications evaluating associations between environmental bisphenol A (BPA) exposure during pregnancy and/or childhood and cognitive or neurobehavioral outcomes in children.

A total of 12 relevant studies were identified. Eight of the 12 studies reported an association between BPA exposure and altered neurobehavior—predominantly following in utero exposure. Reported outcomes included increased aggression, hyperactivity, attention deficits, depression, and anxiety impairments, with indications that effects may differ by child sex. No specific numerical effect sizes or risk estimates were provided in the abstract.
Why it matters
The findings highlight potential vulnerability of fetal brain development to low-level environmental BPA exposure, supporting cautionary guidance for pregnant women while pointing to the need for larger prospective human cohorts.
Limits
