This narrative review examined the literature on cross-stress adaptation, defined as a reduction in stress responsiveness to a novel stressor following prior continuous or intermittent exposure to a different stressor. The authors summarized findings across various physical and psychosocial stressor combinations.

The abstract reports qualitative observations without numerical data or statistics. Positive cross-stress adaptation was reported between altitude and heat stress, swim and inescapable shock stress, hypoxia and cold stress, and psychosocial stressors and exercise. Conversely, cross-adaptation was absent between forced swim and noise stress, as well as between cold and immobilization stress.
Why it matters
The findings indicate that physiological conditioning to one stressor can sometimes confer resistance to novel stressors, though the protective effect is highly specific to the combination of stressors involved.
Limits
The abstract provides no sample sizes, effect sizes, search methodology, or distinction between animal models and human data. Mechanisms remain undefined and cross-adaptation does not generalize across all stressor pairs.
