Loneliness, eudaimonia, and the human conserved transcriptional response to adversity.

What was done
Researchers analyzed peripheral blood samples alongside validated measures of loneliness and eudaimonic well-being in 108 community-dwelling older adults (56% female, mean age 73) from the US Health and Retirement Study. Mixed-effect linear models evaluated associations between conserved transcriptional response to adversity (CTRA) gene expression and psychological measures in separate and joint analyses, adjusting for demographic and behavioral risk factors.
What was found
When analyzed separately, CTRA gene expression was up-regulated with loneliness and down-regulated with eudaimonic well-being. In joint models, the effect of loneliness was completely abrogated, while eudaimonic well-being remained associated with CTRA down-regulation. Similar eudaimonia-dominant associations were found for positive versus negative affect, optimism versus pessimism, and anxiety symptoms. No specific point estimates, standard errors, or p-values were reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
This study suggests that psychological resilience factors, specifically meaning and purpose in life, may offset the pro-inflammatory transcriptional changes typically associated with chronic loneliness.
Limits
The study relies on a cross-sectional design that cannot determine causality. The sample size is modest (n = 108) and limited to older adults in the US, and numerical effect sizes are not reported in the abstract.
