What was done
Researchers analyzed two-day 24-hour dietary recalls from 8,944 participants aged 2 years and older in the 2007–2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) / What We Eat in America (WWEIA). They modeled the nutritional effect of adding USDA dairy composites to each participant's reported intake to reach the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans dairy recommendation of 2.5 to 3 daily servings, accounting for NHANES survey weighting.
What was found
At baseline, 67.4% to 88.8% of children aged 4 and older and 99.0% to 99.6% of adults consumed less than the recommended dairy amounts. Modeled addition of dairy to reach guideline levels reduced the proportion of adults below the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) from food alone for calcium (from 9.9–91.1% down to 0–2.0%), magnesium (from 44.7–88.5% down to 17.3–75.0%), and vitamin A (from 15.3–48.0% down to 0.1–15.1%). The proportion below the EAR for vitamin D remained largely unchanged (91.7–99.9% vs. 91.8–99.9%), and little change was observed for potassium intake relative to the Adequate Intake threshold.
Why it matters
This simulation suggests that increasing dairy consumption to guideline-recommended targets could close population-level intake gaps for calcium, magnesium, and vitamin A, while highlighting that dairy alone is insufficient to address widespread vitamin D and potassium shortfalls.
Limits
The study is a theoretical modeling exercise rather than an intervention trial, assuming dairy is added without displacing other foods or affecting total energy balance. Dietary intake relies on self-reported 24-hour recalls, which are prone to recall bias and underreporting. Health outcomes and biochemical markers of nutrient status were not assessed.
